I'm a young person (19 years old).
When I email someone for a job interview and use their last name (Mr. Smith), and they reply and sign their email with their first name, how should I address them in a subsequent email? Should I use their first or last name?
Email Etiquette?
No. Continue to use their last name.
Reply:Who's this person going to be?
Your super?
I'll stick with Mr(s). thing until meet him (her) in person and be sure to switch to first-name-term, OR until he stated clearly that I should call him with his first name.
Reply:I think if they sign the e-mail with just their first name that gives you the go ahead to use it, but if it's both first and last, I'd continue to use the more formal.
(and good luck )
Reply:I would keep using the last name. Besides, they may be using a set "signature" that gets added to every email.
Reply:I agree. Continue to use Mr. Smith. Until he tells you otherwise. It is just the respectful thing to do.
Reply:ALWAYS use their last name unless they direct you to do otherwise. It's a sign of respect.
Reply:I would go with the first.
After all, they gave you their first name for a reason, right?
Reply:I'd continue to use Mr.Smith or whatever. Don't address them by their first name. THEY are allowed to call themselves by their first name, but not you... I don't think.
Reply:I would continue to use their last name, just as a precaution. When you get to know them a little better (and get the job, hopefully,) you can use their first name. Good Luck!
Reply:im pretty sure that if you personally know the person use first name but if you dont use last name with the mr, ms or mrs. Maybe use both like Mr. Jim Johnson for example
Reply:probably Mr. Smith. if he tells you to address him otherwise than it would be okay.
Reply:NOOOOOOOO-he is trying to be modest but you are a professional and entering a professional relationship-thus use his last name. Th eonly time you are able to use his first name when you have worked for a while with him and actually others on the same level as you are use his first name.
Reply:Use the name you addressed them with on the first e-mail
Reply:In formal language you never use only first name.
"Dear Sir/Madam/Miss Last name"
Reply:***Last name... but lose the Emails!!! Write, type or fax!! Don't ask me why? I don't know? Just that our Personnel Manager at work, will not entertain two bad habits.... Emails, or dirty footwear, in an interview! She says that if they cannot be bothered to make the effort of sending a piece of paper, or clean their shoes.... they aren't interested!!! I don't understand the logic either... but when in Rome...... lol
Reply:still call him Mr. Smith
think of it this way...
if you were emailing your teacher..
and she signed with her first name..
would you sill call her.. Ms. Johnson..
or would you call her....Beth..
Reply:keep using Mr. Smith
Reply:if you didn't get the answer to be sure, just use Mr Smith, the last name.
